OUR HISTORY
In 1949 our facilities began operation on the northwest side of Lenoir, NC as Old North Manufacturing supplying various products to the furniture industry. Changes in ownership and other local economic factors gradually affected the company’s direction of growth and product lines. In 1991 several Old North employees formed Structural Materials by purchasing the property and began supplying various types of concrete structure products to highway contractors on the east coast. This led to developing expansion joints for bridges during the interstate highway growth and SMI became a leading developer for DOT innovations for several eastern states. Presently, SMI is a major supplier of rubber bearing pads, aluminum railing, various expansion joint systems, armored deflection plates and bearing systems for many structures of interchanges in major cities. Today, our team has a combined 60 years of experience offering various products and custom builds for the concrete structure industry.
